What is your favorite teacher doing this summer.. Part 2  (Updated 8/4/2014)

Mrs. Wagner has been exploring "Brain Breaks" in the primary classroom as a way to help children "recharge" and "refocus" during the school day.

Mrs. Bader & Mrs. Wagner wrote a grant proposal with the focus being to infuse Visual Arts into core subject areas.  If the Crayola "Champion Creatively Alive Children" $2500 grant is awarded, the following staff will be working together to give students a new outlet to showcase mastery of standards:  EPHS:  Mrs. Sansenbaugher (Science) and Mrs. Spanos (Spanish), EPMS:  Mrs. Roberts (English), Mrs. Best (Science) and Mrs. Wagner (1st Grade Social Studies). Parent and community business owner, Mrs. Rebecca McElroy, would work with these teachers to showcase student art in downtown store fronts.   Mrs. Vollnogle (EPMS Principal) and Ms. Madsen (EPHS English) also assisted in the editing of the proposal.  Grant notification will take place in October.

Ohio Alerts Text Issue Update

EP has been notified that Verizon Wireless has a policy in place that limits the number of mass text messages that can be sent through their network during peak times.

Unfortunately, this means that community members who subscribe to Verzion Wireless will experience a delay in receiving our text alert messages.  We are told the delay could be up to 30 minutes depending on network volume.

It is suggested that Verizon Wireless customers utilize a backup method of receiving our school closing and delay alerts.   School closing and delay notificaitons are available through our All Call system and through the major television networks in Youngstown.  Also, some of the television stations also offer a text alert option that may be valuable as a backup notificaiton method.

EP Calamity Make-up Day Plan

The East Palestine School District is required to make-up all school days cancelled beyond the five (5) allotted days each year.  The district has currently gone over this allotment by four (4) days.

These four (4) days will be made up on April 21, June 2, June 3,and June 4.  Any further days will be added beyond June 4.

The EP Board of Education passed a resolution on April 7 which allows for the make up days of June, 2-4 to be waived for graduating seniors.

Energy Efficiency to Benefit Academics

On April 7 the East Palestine Board of Education approved a proposal from Energy Optimizers, USA (http://energyoptusa.com/ ) to embark on an energy efficiency program.  This program will fit the exterior of the district with new LED lighting, update the buildings to high efficiency boilers, and retrofit all existing interior lighting fixtures.  These upgrades will be completed using a HB264 project that does not require the use of any taxpayer funds.

HB264 programs allow districts to obtain a loan to complete energy efficient improvements, then use the energy savings to pay back the loan.  Thus, no additional burden to taxpayers.  The EP project will cost $541,840, with an anticipated yearly energy savings of  $56,549.  Of this yearly savings, $45,545 will be used as the annual loan payment.  The remaining annual energy savings of $11,004 is additional revenue for the district.

Over the 15 year term of this program,  EP Schools will realize a minimum of $165,060 in additional revenue at no additional cost to our community.

Through the energy savings of this program, EP Schools will use 90% of the $11,004 of annual energy savings to support increased student achievement in the areas of reading and math.  The additional 10% of energy savings will be applied as an additional payment to reduce the term of the HB264 loan.
